Song of the Week 3: Crawling Down

Kristian: Crawling Down is an old song from the 1990 demo, rebuilt for the Remote Control album. It’s about passion and shame, jealousy and uncertainty. Someone has betrayed or cheated on someone.

Mika: Crawling Down was one of my first efforts as a songwriter. The riffs (although I’m not 100% sure if the others contributed something) and the original lyrics were mine.

What I remember about writing it in 1990 is that I didn’t like it at all. I was pissed off about us recording Crawling Down on our demo, because I thought Escape would have been a better choice. To me, Crawling Down just proved that I wasn’t good enough. ”Is this really the best I can do?”, I remember thinking, ”If it is, it’s not much.”

But then, when I heard Janne & Ari’s new demo in 2008, I finally approved of the song.

Ari Väntänen: Unlike Mr. Songwriter himself, I always thought Crawling Down was a great track. The riffs are slow and heavy, and to me, the overall feel of the song was like in The Thing That Should Not Be by Metallica’. When we made the latter day demo and the album version, I still really enjoyed playing it, especially the verse riff and the part that goes low and never leaves the E minor chord. I definitely wanted Crawling Down on the album, especially when I heard what Kristian did with it. I love his King Diamond/Dave Mustaine-inspired snarls in this one.

Mika Rytilahti: When Kristian wrote his parts and sang Crawling Down, I was all excited about the results. King Diamond was my first association, and I liked King a lot in the 80s. I had never, ever thought that in the right hands, Crawling Down would turn out as great as it did.

CRAWLING DOWN

Holding a key that opens it all
Treasures they waited so long
Fortune that many battled for
What made me strong

The distant fire burns
To light my way through the dusk
Your grieving ghost returns
To tell me that I cannot trust

Pain, anger and hate
Jealousy, envy and greed

Unveil the mirrors of disgust
Reveal your true self to me
Embrace the body that made me
Crawling down

Vultures above, scavengers below
Nothing is what meets the eye
Subconscious movements will tease
Slither to lie

The distant fire burns
It threats my home with its flames
Your grieving ghost returns
To tell I should fall again

Pain, anger and hate
Jealousy, envy and greed

Unveil the mirrors of disgust
Reveal your true self to me
Embrace the body that made me
Crawling down

See the end of innocence
Raise the flesh to the throne
Embrace the body that made me
Crawling down
